The agency says those who are infected may not be aware of it.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released a report that states all adults in the U.S. should be tested for hepatitis B (HBV) at least once in their lifetime.
Estimates from the CDC are that from 580,000 to 2.4 million persons are presently living with HBV infection. It is estimated that two-thirds of them may be unaware they are infected.
The virus is transmitted through contact with infected blood or body fluids. Without treatment and monitoring for the infected person, HBV can lead to liver damage, liver cancer, and death.
The CDC says that the Hepatitis B vaccine is available for all age groups.
